A smartwatch used between home, marina and outdoor trips can remain useful well beyond a single sport. Garmin’s 22 September software announcement brings new functions to select Venu, fēnix, Forerunner and vívoactive watches, alongside compatible Edge cycling computers.

Fall detection on Venu 4

Garmin says Venu 4 can now detect a hard fall and send a message with live location to preset assistance contacts when paired to a smartphone. Owners can set detection for all-day use or specified activities, subject to the company’s technical requirements.

A watch alert depends on connectivity, setup and the ability of the contacts to respond. It should not be treated as a marine distress beacon, emergency radio or guaranteed method of obtaining assistance offshore.

Hands-free everyday functions

Selected compatible watches gain voice commands for actions such as starting a timer or activity and turning on a compatible flashlight. A separate phrase can reach the virtual assistant on a paired smartphone, making some common actions possible without using the screen.

This is convenient when preparing for a walk ashore or handling luggage, but availability differs by model. Owners should consult the specific update schedule instead of assuming every named watch receives every feature.

Training while travelling

New quick-workout suggestions are based on the runner’s chosen duration and intensity, while Garmin Run Coach adds adapted plans including run-walk sessions. Recovery and activity data can support a varied holiday routine, but they are estimates rather than clinical assessments.

Edge cycling computers also receive changes to Enduro ride profiles. Yacht guests who cycle on a shore day should still follow local traffic rules and use the appropriate protective equipment.

How the update arrives

Garmin describes these as free software updates rolling out to supported products through automatic synchronisation, Garmin Connect or Garmin Express. The particular features should be checked against the watch’s software version and the user’s phone.
